Haywood Sixth Form Academy students to tread the boards with Reveal Theatre Company

Haywood Sixth Form Academy is partnering with Reveal Theatre Company to offer students specialist training from working actors and directors.

Students who enroll on the Performing Arts (Acting) BTEC Diploma with the new Haywood Sixth Form Academy will learn from some of the best actors and directors in the business including Robert Marsden, Creative Director, Dominic Meir, Artistic Associate and renowned actor Sean O’Callaghan.

Robert Marsden explained: “In addition to my role as the Creative Director for Reveal Theatre, I am also the Award Leader and Senior Lecturer in Drama Practice at Staffordshire University. As such, I see hundreds of auditions from budding young actors every year.

“The standard of applications and auditions varies massively and I think there’s a real opportunity to give BTEC students better guidance early on in their studies. When Haywood Sixth Form Academy approached Reveal Theatre and suggested working together to teach the BTEC in Performing Arts (Acting), I could see huge potential in the partnership.

“This really is a unique opportunity for young people to get a head start on their path to a career in the theatre by working with ‘jobbing’ actors and directors.”

Students studying the BTEC Diploma in Performing Arts (Acting) will study practical workshops and performances with Reveal Theatre Company at The Mitchell Arts Centre in Hanley. They will also attend touring theatre productions throughout the course of the year with additional post-show talks and master classes alongside select shows.

Carl Ward, Executive Headteacher, said: “Haywood Sixth Form Academy offers students a completely different approach to their education. We already have fantastic links with universities and business leaders and work closely with them to give our students the best possible start. We’re focused on making sure that every student succeeds in their chosen path, whether that’s getting in to their chosen course at University or beginning a career.

“There’s a real wealth of experience right on our doorstep with the Reveal Theatre Company – from Robert’s credentials as a director to the likes of Sean O’Callaghan who trained as an actor at RADA and spent a number of years with the RSC. Our students will be working with the best and gaining valuable insight into the real world of acting and directing in the theatre.”

As creative Director of Reveal Theatre, Robert Marsden has produced, co-produced and directed numerous productions in the Midlands, London and national tours (Am I Not a Man and a Brother? and King Macbeth).
